Question:
I seem to have lots of things wrong with my feet. My toenails look yellow and brittle and I have a lot of sore skin making it difficult to walk. Can you help?
Answer:
Nails that are thickened, brittle and have a yellow or white colour at the tip could well have a fungal infection. This infection is responsible for about 50% of all nail conditions and affects particularly athlete’s foot sufferers and those over 55 years of age. There is one main treatment available from your pharmacy. That is amorilfine 5% which can take up to a year to clear and there is quite of lot of preparation with meticulous cleaning of the nail before use.
Your Gp may ask you to hand in nail cuttings for diagnosis and if more than two nails are affected then it’s recommended that you see your GP who may prescribe an oral treatment such as terbinafine tablets. Sore skin on the feet is usually a sign of thickened, hardened skin and the ideal situation is to prevent build up by moisturising with a cream such as CCS or Flexitol.
